Renew a Bean
Renewable Energy / Graphing / Probability / 9th grade
This activity is based on a game presented by the UCS (union of concerned scientists ) on teaching renewable energy. Students will play a game where they draw from a bag of renewable and non renewable energy sources (beans). After each turn non renewables will be depleted and removed from the bag while renewable energy sources will go back into the bag. Each turn the students should graph how many renewable and non renewable beans they take out. With each turn representing one decade the students can graph the results and observe how the amount of renewables and non renewables change over time.
Time: 45-60 minutes
Materials: 100 Lima beans for each group of 4, plastic bag, graphing paper
