Run-Walk Speed Lab

Speed, Distance, and Time / Grades 5-8 / Formulas / Algebra / Graphing

This lesson introduces students to calculating speed with distance and time information. Specifically, students learn about Olympic athletes and cheetahs to learn about exceptionally fast examples. Then, students create pairs to measure and graph their own speed and convert it from meters/ sec. to miles per hour. This lesson and presentation has some great video examples which can help further understanding of independent components of motion. Finally, students will discuss and interpret the slope of different forms of motion (running, walking, and an 'other').
